Stalag Luft III and the Great Escape

Stalag Luft III was the camp made famous by the "Great Escape." Check out this NOVA site to experience one of the tunnels that the POWs built and used for the escape in March of 1944. It was less than a year later when my father marched past the tunnels to leave the camp, as the Germans sought to move their "hostages" to a safer location before the arrival of the advancing Russian armies.
